Surgery
Well, I finally went to the "big city" to see a specialist and I have to have my tonsils out -- at 35! I'm not looking forward to that. Any other adutls out there who have had a tonsillectomy? I hear there is a lot of pain afterwards.
In other news. . .

Maddie turned 5 on Sunday! I really can't believe she is already 5.

While riding in the car up to the hospital, I did a bit of knitting on my Ruffles scarf. Not much progress on Ingeborg this past week due to the party preparations and such. I did get a couple of new knitting books in the mail though! I'll be reviewing them soon!
Happy Birthday Maddie! What a cutie she is!
Sorry about the surgery. But look at it as an excuse to eat LOTS of ice cream!

Oh noooo! I hope it goes smoothly and you recover quickly.
Happy birthday to Maddie! =)

Have you set your surgery date yet?
Is it outpatient? I haven't had my tonsils out, but my official separation date with my gallbladder is next Tuesday.
There've been many advances in surgery and medicine, so I know your tonsillectomy will be a breeze!

i had my tonsils out at age 22 (18 years ago) and here are the things i remember about it:
-not severe pain, but it felt more like a sore, gunky throat. swallowing solid things is hard so ice cream and popsicles help with the gunk and the soreness.
-for about a year or a little more afterward, my sensation of taste was a little off. certain things didn't taste as intense (or in the case of chocolate, as good) as they did pre surgery. it all eventually came back, but it took a while.
-my voice changed slightly-got a teeny bit lower.
good luck! it's not a bad surgery and i'm sure you'll do fine.

Sorry about the surgery, but I had my tonsils taken out when I was five. I just remember having to have ice cream and popsicles (yum!).
Happy, happy birthday to Maddie!

I had my tonsils out at 22. I have been glad I did it every day since. I kept getting sick, over and over. Haven't had a single bad throat illness since then.
I got pretty sick from the anesthesia they used. It took me 24 hours or so to recover from that but from that point on it was pretty smooth sailing. I didn't have much pain at all. Scabs in my throat was pretty gross but I got over that.
Good luck with the surgery, happy birthday to Maddie, and I can't wait to hear how you like the Melanie Fallick book.

I had my tonsils out at age 19. It was painful, but the anaesthesia was what did me in. One tip: don't eat ice cream. The dairy is mucous producing and actually makes you have to swallow more. Not good on a raw throat. Try fruit juice popsicles instead.

Good luck with your tonsils, and Happy Birthday to your daughter (she's adorable-my daughter is 10 and it went just as fast).
I have a question totally off-topic. I've made your booga bag and sophie bag, and on the sophie I decided to thread cotton rope thru the i-cord handle before felting and it came out very strong. I worried after making the booga that knowing how we tend to carry everything we own, the straps would weaken over time. Just wanted to pass my idea on to you and get your opinion.
Take care!

I met you awhile back at a knitting meetup (February I think???) and I think I mentioned to you that they told me the same thing, I need my tonsils out too. I am 33 and I watched my son go through getting his out at age 8 and it was not fun. He bounced back pretty quickly but I have heard the same thing you have that the older you are, the tougher it is to recover. Even my family practice doc told me that. So I have been sitting here contemplating doing it and the ENT told me I would feel SOOOO much better after it is all said and done but I am so scared of what it will be like that I keep putting it off. Good luck to you, I will wait to hear how it is for you and maybe, just maybe I will go through with it! :) Happy Birthday to Maddie. My daughter Kira is 3. It would be cool to get together sometime! Come visit me at the new yarn shop in Plainfield, I will be working weekends!

Friend of mine did his at 37 - he bounced RIGHT back, one night in the hospital, a few days home from work, and that was it! (and he;s usually a big baby LOL)
Hope you get to feeling better soon!!

Sorry to hear about the surgery, have you looked into the outpatient tonsillectomy? You are awake so no anesthesia and they just zap them out with a laser. Supposedly it smells bad but afterwards there is far less pain and a much faster recovery time. You get to go home the same day. http://www.entnet.org/KidsENT/tonsil_procedures.cfm This is a great site for the different procedures.

Hope you are doing well and feeling okay - as for the pain, if you get some, don't be shy about taking pain medications - that's why scientists have invented them!

Happy Birthday to the little cutie! Hope the surgery goes well. I've never had my tonsils out and I'm hoping they don't start getting antsy on me.

I had my tonsils out 11 days before my 30th birthday. It wasn't fun, but I'm sure you'll be fine. Stock up on Jello and ices - ice cream wasn't allowed because it coats your throat. One thing is for sure - you'll be glad that you did it! Before I had them out, I would get sick constantly. Now I'm much better!
Get well soon!!!

I am sorry to hear that you will have to have surgery but I am sure that you will be fine... or are you just trying to get a holiday? :D Pain is relative right? Childbirth is probably worse.
Still, I had the chickenpox when I was 16 and I was out of school for a month, my younger sister by eleven years was out for four days. I wouldn't be surprised if it is worse as an adult... but don't sweat it. Your family will feed you popsicles and jellos by the dozen and pamper poor mommy with love. Good luck and don't phsyc yourself out!
Happy birthday Maddie!! Who knew 5 years could whiz by so fast. Sasha is 3 1/2 and they've been the fastest years ever!

I had mine out at 29. Some pain, not unbearable. The problem I had was that the pain meds really upset my stomach ( although I had a worse time when I had surgery for endometriosis and some other problems). Stock up on popsicles and Ice Cream!
Happy Knitting

I had my tonsils out at 27. I scheduled the surgery for thursday thinking I would be back at work on monday. I actually missed the whole following week . My problem is that I have a hard time slowing down so I thought I would just bounce right up . However, one of my tonsils was the size of a lemon or something so it hurt a little more than I expected. I also wasn't so down with taking drugs. Two c sections later I realize pain killers can be your friend. So, give yourself a nice cushion of recovery time and take lots of pain meds and you will be a.o.k.!
