Books to Recuperate By

Well, the surgery is tomorrow morning at 7:30.  (Made all the more harsh because I don't get out of bed before 8:30 as a rule.)  So I decided to stop at the library to get some books to get me through.  Here's what I have and what I got:

Non-fiction:

  • Bait and Switch by Barbara Ehrenreich.  I read Nickel and Dimed and loved it, so this one has been on my list.  I'm about halfway through.  Should be able to finish it easily.  (If you haven't read Nickel and Dimed -- it's a must!)
  • The Polysyllabic Spree by Nick Hornby.  A book about reading, written by an avid reader!  What could be better?  This is a compilation of the columns he wrote for the Believer and they are pretty funny.  (I'm about halfway through this one too.)  Darn!  I should have looked for A Long Way Down, his most recent novel, while I was at the library.

Fiction:

  • Watermelon by Marian Keyes.  This was the first book I read by her many years ago.  She is my guilty pleasure and I have loved every one of her books!  Perfect reading for recuperation.  I also have her new book of essays, Cracks in My Foundation, which I can wander through if I need short bits to read.
  • Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer.  I think I heard that this was a good book.  Maddie was ready to go and I needed to grab something.  Has anyone read it?  Liked it?
  • White Teeth by Zadie Smith.  If you are an avid reader like me, there are probably books that you can't remember if you have read.  White Teeth is one of those books.  I really thought I read it, but I'm not so sure.  At any rate, it is supposed to be an incredible book and I'm pretty confident that it is a good choice.

That's the list.  Except for A Million Little Pieces by James Frey.  I ordered this from Amazon last week and they haven't shipped it yet, hmmmmm. . . Hopefully it will arrive this week because after seeing this guy on Oprah, I must say that I am intrigued!

Signing off!  I'll be back after some rest and hopefully lots of ice cream!

Best of luck! Local or general anesthesia? Don't forget that general anesthesia takes a while to work off. Plan on sleeping (even though I know you'll want to be knitting and reading). Here's wishing a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.

Good luck with your surgery & recuperation. I hope you get some time to read & relax once you are feeling up to it!
Marian Keyes is one of my guilty pleasures, too. ;)

Well..I hope it all goes well and you are bouncing back quickly!
I was going to get Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close when I went to Maine. But I didn't have time to get out to get it. I will wait for your review.. ;)
Have fun eating lots of ice cream!

Good luck with your surgery. It looks like you will have alot of great reading to help you recuperate.
I'm reading a million little pieces right now and so far it's a really good book.

I hope it all goes well for you and you recuperate well and quickly!

Mmmm ice cream...I don't need these tonsils, do I?

Good luck, happy resting!

Hi Julie,
I hope it all goes well tomorrow!! It will all be over soon.
I really liked reading "Nickeled and Dimed" too.

Best of luck to you, Julie, for an uneventful operation and a smooth & speedy recovery. I'll be thinking of you.

Get well soon! I'll be thinking of you. Aren't you supposed to have ice cream after tonsils out? I don't eat ice cream as a rule, but for this, I would.

I'll be keeping you in my thoughts tomorrow. I'm wishing you a fast and happy recovery!

Good luck and happy reading. I hope you have a fast recovery.

Good luck tomorrow!
I know that it'll all go well and you'll be back blogging for us in no time!
Maria

Good luck tomorrow!!

Good Luck with the surgery Julie! Please tell me the truth on how the experience goes. I know you will feel much better after those tonsils are out and you can get back on your feet. You are my "guinea pig" to see if I should bring it up to the ENT and go through with it!!!!! Take care!

Hi Julie -- good luck with the surgery! And here's yet another suggestion for a good recuperation book (if you haven't read it yet, ask someone to go out and get it for you!): "The Time-Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger. Best wishes.

Good luck!

I just wanted to wish you good luck!

I think those are all excellent choices! I really liked White Teeth and like Marian Keyes. The Foer book is good, but I like Everything is Illuminated better. The Man just finished reading A Million Little Pieces and loved it. Feel better soon!

Good luck with your surgery Julie. Before you know it, it will only be a memory!

Sending good thoughts your way! Hope all goes well!

Good luck! I hope everything goes smoothely and that you have a quick and painless recovery.

I'm sending you wishes for a fast recovery, little pain and lots of ice cream.

Hope that its all done, it went well and that you aren't feeling too bad.

Good luck with your procedure and I hope you feel better real soon ;-)

Hope your surgery is uneventful and you have a speedy recovery. Enjoy the ice cream and popsicles. :D Enjoy the good reads. Sounds like you have a great assortment!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery! :)
