Um, back in the day, when I was 9 I was already taking the CTA bus 30 minutes or so to school, coming home on my own, cooking dinner, and in 7th and 8th grade I had an open campus for lunch. They would open the doors at 11;30 and expect us to come back at 12:30 for lunch. In Chicago. Open campus! We could roam the city at lunchtime. Potbelly for lunch. My Pi pizza for lunch. Going to friends houses within walking distance.
They would throw the principal in jail if they asked for open campus for lunch for middle school students today.
Kids can do amazing things if you just give them the responsibility.

Julie, I remember the first time I left my girls home alone. They're a year apart. I told them to sit on the couch, don't answer the door, and don't answer the phone. I went to get gas in the car less than five minutes from my house, but I think I held my breath the whole time I was gone. When I got back, they were smooshed together at the end of the couch. No one came to the door and the phone didn't ring. After that, I felt a little more free.
