439 sites in the ring and I'm all caught up.

Thanks to Janice, Siouxsie and Sharlene. who have voluntered to check part of the ring each week. That's 5 helpers that I have so far. If you have offered to help and I haven't gotten back to you, I want to say thank you! The reason that I may not have gotten back to you is that I'm looking for checkers spread throughout the blog ring. That way you will be checking sites in your "neck of the woods." I really need checkers now that have been in the ring a while and are towards the beginning of the ring. Going by the "list" function in Ring Surf (which in no way corresponds to your site id?!) I have checkers for the following:

  • 101-150
  • 201-250
  • 301-350
  • 351-400
  • 401-450

I'm still planning to stop adding new sites once we reach 500 for a little while until we get this new "shared" method of checking the ring working smoothly. Then if all goes well, and I can find new checkers for the additional sites, I will open the ring up again.

Happy Knitting!

First I want to say Thank You to a couple of people who are helping me to maintain the ring. First Theresa who has been helping me to check the ring and who has agreed to take over checking responsibility for 50 sites. I also want to say thank you to Jen who is also taking over responsibility for checking 50 sites. Thank you so much!!

Maintaining a ring of this size is a lot of work. If you are willing to take responsibility for 50 sites, let me know!

I also want to say thank you to Lydia who was the only person who took the time to provide resources for new bloggers. Here is her comment:

For me, the best tool was to look at blogs that I really liked (or really didn't like) and look at the source code. I could then see what was happening and play with it on my own.

Here are links that I found useful; most of these aren't strictly html, but I've found all of them useful for my blog.

HTML:
http://annamation.ca/annaknits/freeblogstuff.php Anna talks about percentage bars, marquees, and photo hosting.

http://www.indigirl.com/knit_tracker/ A different kind of project tracker.

Blogs:
http://www.ibloggers.net/forum/ This is geared towards (as the name would suggest) users of iBlog, the software that I use on one of my blogs. The people there, however, often talk about html things that can apply to any blog. Similarly, http://www.ibloggers.net/C179279332/E419950350/index.html is a list of other services (tagboards, online indicators, etc.) aimed at iblog users, but it's the best collection I've seen so far.

http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=752&topic=22 This is a list of some common html codes, aimed at Blogger users, but useful to others as well.

Color:
http://www.december.com/html/spec/color.html Hexadecimal color codes for all sorts of variations.

http://www.pixy.cz/apps/barvy/index-en.html Color wheel so you can figure out harmonious (or extremely unharmonious) colors.

Finally, I would like to let you all know that the queue has been checked and I am completely caught up. If you are still in the queue, there is a reason. Perhaps your ring code is not correct or you have not posted regulalry. Please check your site and correct any errors. You have 7 days from the date that you apply to get your code on your site.

Already up to 413!!

Many people have signed up to join the ring since I opened it back up, so as you can imagine I am very busy with ring administration.

When many new bloggers join at the same time, I usually get a flood of questions in my email about technical issues. While I could probably fix everyone's problems by slogging through their sorce code, I do not have time. I try to be helpful when I have time to help, but right now I don't.

There are *many* resources besides me for help with html and blogging platforms. I do have a faq on this website which you should check *before* you email me or anyone else for help. And then there are html tutorials. Here are a few:

And there are *many* more out there.

There is also a Yahoo Group for Knitting Bloggers called knitblogs. I'm sure that if you post a question there, someone will be able to point you in the right direction.

If you have any other resources for new bloggers, please put them in the comments. I will post them to this blog next Monday.

Have a great weekend and Happy Knitting!

The Ring is now open!!

But there are a few changes:

  • The ring is getting very large and at a certain point I won't be able to keep it in good working order, so I'm limiting the number of blogs in the ring to 500.
  • If you don't post for a while, I still won't put you in the queue unless it has been about a month. However, if you continue not to post, you will be completely deleted after 6 weeks (I used to wait two months).
  • If you are already in the ring and make chages to your site (new url or something like that) it is your responsibility to chage it. I can't track people down to get them to make the changes and it is not my responsibility to keep your account updated.
  • You still need to post to your blog on a regular basis for over a month before you join the ring. If I see that you haven't, you will be deleted from the queue.

I want to keep the ring in good working order and a lot of people have told me that they enjoy the ring. Please do your part to keep it in shape!

My move is this Saturday! It will take me a couple of weeks to get settled in the new place, so I think I will be opening the ring again around June 19th. Please come back and sign up *after* I post that the ring is open again. (If you join before then, you will be deleted.) Thanks!
