I finished reading three different books yesterday...
Blind Lake by Robert Charles Wilson -- Best book I've read by him to date. Even better than Axis
, in my opinion. You have to love sci-fi with aliens and thinking computers.
Spirited Away, Vol. 1 by Hayao Miyazaki -- I read this graphic novel in the afternoon becasue Maddie finished it and loved it. If you have kids who love Japanese comic book stuff (Manga) and are worried about content, this is a great book. (Some of the Manga stuff can be age inapproproate, so I find it's not always easy to find stuff my 9 year old can read.) Lovely graphics -- exciting story.
Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman -- These little hardbound books that some authors have been putting out lately just kill me. Nice illustrations, pretty book cover, great little novella -- you get the idea. (Philip Pullman has done a couple of these, which I also own and love.) This is a very short novel based on Norse mythology (Thor, Odin & Loki all appear) in which a crippled boy has an adventure. Gaiman's voice shines through, so if you are a fan, this is a must read.
In addition to these three, Maddie and I are reading The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1) by Rick Riordan, which fits nicely with our current curriculum. She's been reading a lot of Greek mythology and history and just finished The Iliad and the Odyssey
-- an illustrated version by Marcia Williams.
And since I can never go to sleep bookless, I started Kent Haruf's Where You Once Belonged.
I recenlty finished several other books, which I haven't posted on the blog yet, so when I get my act together, I'll get this updated. (If I don't, I'll completely forget what I've read before the year is out. The blog has become part book log for me.)
What are you all reading?
